North Devon Surf and Cycle Bus - get on board with all your kit!

Whether you already live here or whether you are visiting our beautiful region, getting around North Devon has never been so easy with the Surf Cycle Bus,
The specially adapted double decker bus serves Barnstaple train station, meeting trains in the morning, afternoon and in the evening. To see the connecting times between the train and the bus, please click here

How does it work?

Just like an ordinary bus service in the exception that passengers can only sit upstairs. That's because under Health and Safety regulations, large sporting equipment cannot be mixed with passengers. So, the easiest solution to this problem was to convert the lower floor by removing all the seats and install specifically designed racking to allow for surfboard and bikes storage. The upper floor remains the same.

Who can use it?

Anyone who is mobile enough to use stairs. Surfers can travel with short or long boards, cyclist with their bikes, parents with pushchairs, walkers with their dogs. The bus will carry anything just as long as it fits securely and does not affect the safety of the driver and passenger's safety.

How much does it cost?

The fare structure is similar to other bus operators. You can buy a single or return journey and we accept Concessionary fares but please do check with the driver for all other special fares. We do not charge extra for equipment.

Suggestions for Days Out

Go Surfing! North Devon has some of the best beaches in the South West. The bus goes to Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe.

Cycle the Tarka Trail! It's almost 100% flat and goes on for 31 miles from Braunton to Meeth. If you are staying in Woolacombe or close by and do not feel like cycling on the main road, you can take the bus to Braunton or Barnstaple and once there, you could cycle to Fremington Quay, Instow, Bideford or further afield.

There are different locations from where you can access the trail but from Braunton, the Tarka Trail is accessible from Caen car park. From Barnstaple, the trail is accessible from the train station.

Cycle the coastal path between Croyde and Woolacombe or Woolacombe to Croyde . This is a bridal way, so you may encounter walkers and horse riders but one thing's for sure, you won't be disappointed with the sea views. This is a fairly easy short ride, with flat and small down hill sections and a few short and not too steep hills. Just make sure you have enough energy left for one of those lovely Devonshire ice cream or cream teas!
